Mushroom Pointer is a free iPhone app. It watches the forest floor through your camera and draws a box around anything that looks like a mushroom.

It does not tell you what species something is, and it never says whether anything is safe. It points; you look.

A few things worth knowing:

  • It misses mushrooms and boxes other things. Pine cones, stones and leaves sometimes get a box, and some mushrooms get none. Move the slider towards More to see more candidates, or towards Fewer to see only the surer ones.
  • It works offline. Nothing is uploaded; there is no account.
  • The camera is off? Open Settings → Mushroom Pointer → Camera.
  • Frames you keep live only on your phone. Deleting the app deletes them.

Never eat anything based on this app

Mushroom Pointer does not identify mushrooms and cannot tell whether one is safe. Edible and deadly mushrooms can look alike. Ask an expert before eating anything you have found.
